The museum is housed in the Casa Calderara, a fine example of Renaissance bourgeois architecture.
By the will of the painter Antonio Calderara (1903-1978), the building has been transformed into a home-studio with the aim of preserving the collection of works of contemporary painting and sculpture.
“The story of Antonio Calderara and a choice of contemporary artists his friends” is the title that he wanted to give to his collection, which consists of 327 works of contemporary painting and sculpture, of which 56 of Calderara himself and 271 of 133 European and extra-European artists chosen by the Lombard master and bound to him by relationships of friendship and esteem.
Among the works on display are some of the likes of Jesus Raphael Soto, Josef Albers, Vasarely, Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Osvaldo Licini, Piero Manzoni and many others.
The address is Ameno in via Bardelli n. 9, is not located in the center of the village, but in the hamlet of Vacciago.
I would like to underline that on the official website of the foundation (link below) it is possible to do a search by artist, work title or keyword and see the digitized canvases. In this way it is possible to prepare one’s own visit, knowing already which works will be found in the rooms.
